A DAY CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING - Seize The Moment

Rebecca Lori2.jpgMost of us go through life on auto-pilot - we wake up in the morning, switch off the alarm, drag our backsides out of bed and head to work where we perform our daily duties. We then either head home to indulge in some mind-numbing TV or meet friends in the pub and drink mind-numbing beer – and you’ve got to wonder, is this really a healthy existence?

The reason for my question is because I’ve recently been made redundant – or should I say my ‘role’ was made redundant as my company had to ‘restructure’ and this has caught me completely off-guard. My personal safety net has been thrown away and now I am painfully aware that living in the capital city without a regular income is not easy. In fact it’s near enough impossible.

Yesterday I visited my ‘friendly’ local bank to see if they could help me sort out my ever increasing debts, and as expected the answer came quickly – “NO Miss Lori, I am afraid we can’t help”. I left the bank feeling like a dark cloud was looming over my head and decided to go for a walk.

In West Norwood there are only a few places you can go for a bit of peace and quiet – the local library or the cemetery – so yesterday morning with a thunder cloud following me like a guardian devil, I made a conscious decision to walk amongst the dead.

Now, I understand that people may think I am crazy making this decision, but they’re wrong - it’s one of the best places to really listen to your true thoughts.

As I entered the cemetery I passed weathered grave stones depicting angels, some of which had been decorated with colourful flowers and hand-written notes. I spent time reading the sometimes-funny but often tragic epitaphs and found that it gave me something vital that I was missing – perspective. Ok, I was out of a job and my personal life is feeling the strain of my redundancy, but at least I was still alive. I couldn’t ever know the pain of losing a 3 week old baby or a 20 year old daughter, but there are people out there that have been through this hell and are going through tragic situations like this on a daily basis. Babies are born and people die, this is the theatre of life and whether we’ve bought a ticket or not, we’re all part of this dramatic cycle.

Now, I am not saying that just because people die we shouldn’t allow ourselves to get stressed with our daily problems – stress is subjective; we all worry and fret about different things. All I am saying is that we need to accept that whatever it is that is making us feel stressed, someone else has also been through it and there’s always a poor soul going through something that’s a hell of a lot worse.

Just one day can change everything; one moment can change everything. The moment a child is born, the moment you lose someone special or the moment someone says those sweet little words ‘I love you’. Life is full of good and bad moments and it’s how you react to such moments that ultimately shapes who you are.

We all need to learn how to appreciate the ‘here and now’. To coin a clichéd phrase we don’t just need to ‘seize the day’ we need to ‘seize the moment’. We simply don’t know what is lurking around the corner so we need to live out our dreams right now without a moment’s hesitation. Have a great business idea but always been afraid to bit the bullet? Just do it. Fancy exploring the world? Save up and buy your ticket. It’s really as easy as that, follow your dreams and live the life that you have always wanted right now.

As for me – I am going to stop feeling sorry for myself, drag my backside out of bed and make the most of today. Being made redundant doesn’t have to be a negative event in my life; it’s the start of a new one. Maybe I’ll explore the business idea that I’ve been working on or maybe I’ll pack my bags and see the world? Who knows? I’ve got the whole day to decide…
